The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs box.
