The creative mastermind could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.” Now that Season 1 of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room opened up about the audience reaction and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus. Regarding the Incredible Viewer Reception It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise. “The experience is akin to force fed something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.” Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show. “We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.” “It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds. The Big Question: Will the creator See the Ending of Pluribus? Considering Gilligan and his team are not listening by audience theories, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… sort of. “We've developed some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” he states. “but we are always ready to discard a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.” On the other hand, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort. “My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.” Alternatively, one could always use the classics? “I'd love for Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes. Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
