Lando Norris edged out team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the final moments of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The British racer, who took the championship lead from Piastri by a single point after his victory in Mexico City recently, beat the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs.

Until that point, Oscar Piastri had been the leading McLaren during the running before sprint qualifying set to begin at 18:30 GMT.

Max Verstappen, the only other driver in the points battle, lying with a 36-point deficit Norris, finished in P17 as his team opted for a unique setup.

Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to have an incident, if briefly, when he lost control at corner four during the early running.

Tsunoda spun out over the curbs on exit before sliding over the gravel trap, and was blessed to get away with just a minor contact of the wall.

The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the final moments of the session, rotating twice through the quick descending Mergulho corner before the final corner on to the start-finish straight.

The seven-time champion wrapped up in 19th place, one place behind team-mate Charles Leclerc.

The McLaren drivers were significantly quicker of the rest of the field, with the German's car in third, 0.619 seconds slower than the Australian's time.

The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was in fourth, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto fifth from Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
