The band's live shows have propelled them ascend to headliner status of line-ups throughout the world. Grammy Milestone The group are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in for their new album, I Quit. They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the award. "I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?" The significance of the nomination resonates with the sisters. "We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that paved the way." Heartbreak and Humour The album emerged from a period of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to let go. The themes track breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real time who they are becoming. "I adore description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'." The trio won a notable new artist poll in 2013, and have since then achieved several successful albums. Development of Sound That newfound resilience demanded a fresh approach – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before. For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums. "Drums are such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states. "'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound." I Quit refines Haim's signature sound, merging guitar-driven rock with contemporary beats and catchy pop hooks. Anecdotes and Shared Laughter The trio's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories. Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight. "When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing." The band concluded a lengthy tour, but state they aim to perform live in the coming years. A Confident Future It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.
