‘All those silly things – do them’: Guruzeta’s path from rehabilitation to success with the Basque club

Thehe first time Gorka Guruzeta featured in English soil, an young representing the youth squad against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Adams Park in the 2015 season, he found the net. It was a superb volley, too. “In fact,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals in my career.” Thus the club did what was necessary: they substituted him.

“I became very upset,” the attacker says, before breaking into laughter. “I’m sure there’s footage. We traveled to face United and I performed well. They didn’t let me play the latter period: I was without a signed my contract, I was scoring goals, speculation was rife, as you’d expect. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I came across reports about Manchester United, standard transfer gossip. I’m not certain the validity, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”

At Lezama, Bilbao, the early training is ready to commence; post-session, the short journey to Loiu airport and another flight to Britain, on this occasion to face Newcastle in the UCL on midweek. Just saying those two words brings a smile to his face. This is proving a tough year for the team, partly because of the requirements of competing at this level. Currently he stands as the club’s leading marksman in the UCL, where they are countercultural and returning after absence in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.

The player believed it challenging enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. The son of the one-time rival player Xabi Guruzeta and a season ticket holder at the team he now opposes, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that nurtured the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and the tactician. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his first-team bow in the 2018 season, he went through a serious knee problem, dropped, a drop in category and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, coming back aged 26 to experience the peak of the club’s history.

“Joining the setup thinking you won’t reach the first team but every phase you progress through you’re still there and you can observe the approach. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his first game and early 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I suffered the ACL injury.

“It was a huge blow but I reflect on it as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the perspective. Healing from a serious ailment is challenging, but it aids growth. You adopt practices new to you. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then head home, like when you’re a kid. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so do everything. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. With hip imbalance, work on that. With decent ankle function, enhance it further. Every small aspect: do them.

“Among professionals you’re going to collide with opponents who have crashed into players repeatedly. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and the change is dramatic. Recovery revealed that. Training finishes, but additional work remains. Everyone else is ready, really ready; the same applies.”

You also have to play. The striker moved upset in that year, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. At Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he netted three goals in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the goals started to flow. “Many experience this: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, work, believe, and if one day a vacancy arises for your role, a return could happen. You have to be ready. When they decided to call again, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, compete continentally, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
