Al Gore has suggested that concern of facing pressure from President Trump may have prompted Bill Gates to step back on his climate crisis advocacy.

Describing Trump as “an exceptionally unethical commander-in-chief”, Gore warned that the president’s promotion of fossil fuels and retreat from clean power is “badly damaging” the American economic system.

Environmental Harm and Economic Impact

In an conversation at the Cop30 United Nations climate summit, Gore remarked, “Trump’s already doing a lot of damage to the environment. Perhaps the biggest harm he’s doing is to the U.S. itself.”

He highlighted that the Asian nation is now selling eco-friendly innovations with a total sales figure that exceeds all oil and gas shipments from the U.S., a trend that is accelerating rapidly.

Bill Gates’ Controversial Shift

Bill Gates, formerly a prominent advocate in environmental efforts, recently argued for pushing the climate crisis to a lower priority, in favor of health issues.

Gore expressed bewilderment at this shift, saying, “The idea of slowing down on climate further surprised environmental experts that I know and respect.”

“Yes, Trump loves it. That may be what Gates was shooting for.”

Gore observed that after the president’s return to office, Gates fired most of his climate staffers, went to the presidential residence, and lavished praise on Trump.

Concern Over Backlash

Gore suggested that Gates, like many wealthy executives, may be worried of facing retaliation by Trump. “It may be that he is genuinely concerned that the president will target him,” Gore remarked.

Trump reacted to Gates’ change of heart with praiseful social media posts.

Gore added, “The only rave review of what he released last week was from Donald Trump. Yes, he approves. That may be what he intended.”

Challenging a Misleading Dichotomy

Gore stressed that presenting the environmental challenge and worldwide health issues as competing priorities is incorrect.

“The idea that there is a either-or decision between wellness and the environment has been widely dismissed by virtually every scientist in this area,” he said.

“It’s completely irrational that nations are requiring taxpayers to subsidise the damage of part of humanity’s future.”

Gore pointed out that the Lancet published a report on the same day as Gates’ announcement, detailing the significant wellness impacts of failing to address environmental issues.

A Call for Redirected Funding

Instead of diverting funds from environmental initiatives, Gore suggested that Gates should advocate for repurposing the hundreds of billions spent on fossil fuel subsidies toward wellness and environmental innovations.

“Accelerating solutions to the climate crisis is one of the most impactful ways to improve healthcare in the world,” he stated.

Defending the UN Climate Process

Gore strongly supported the annual Cop meetings, explaining that they achieve significant results than they are given credit for.

“The Cop process acts as a focal point for industry and NGO groups that gather annually,” he remarked. “Many of them come up with their own agreements that move things forward.”

“These international meetings is one of the principal reasons that the sustainability revolution has shifted into high gear.”

He added that businesses and nations are moving forward with new technology and adopting clean power and other low-carbon initiatives.

Optimistic Trends and Shifting Attitudes

Gore highlighted what he sees as a “shift in attitudes” in the United States, with many people turning towards climate action even as the federal government dismantles them.

He warned that Trump might face a “more independent” Congress following recent voting losses for Republican candidates.

“There’s a completely false view circulating that somehow we are falling behind.”

Gore praised Zohran Mamdani for his successful run for NYC leadership, noting that while he did not agree with some of his proposals, his political skills were remarkably evident.

Highlighting Climate Impacts

At the conference, Gore presented delegates with a visual presentation of devastation caused by the environmental emergency.

Standing before a large display showing images of recent catastrophes worsened by global heating, Gore declared, “It is literally insane that we are allowing this to continue.”

He spoke passionately while displaying images of record drought in the rainforest, melting polar ice, and destructive storms in Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, Brazil, the Pacific nation, and the U.S..

“For how much longer are we going to do nothing and keep increasing temperatures so that these types of disasters get even worse?” he questioned.

Adaptation, Mitigation, and Realism

Gore emphasized the need to both adapt and mitigate, but warned that if we allow this insanity—treating the atmosphere as a dump—some impacts will be very difficult to cope with.

Promoting Climate Trace

His primary effort at the summit has been to promote the Climate Trace project, which monitors planet-heating emissions and air pollutants causing wellness issues globally.

“There is great enthusiasm about these new tools,” Gore said. “We possess the technology and the deployment models. A few individuals think we lack the political will, but as I like to remind people, political will is a renewable resource.”
